Acrylic paints are easy to use for the beginner, they dry very quickly, and are water soluble. It can be used thickly (impasto) or thinned right down with water and used like watercolour. When it is dry  a varnish can be applied. If gloss varnish is used then it can look like an oil painting. Acrylic can be used on primed canvas, wood, paper and many other surface. It is difficult to remove from brushes ( and clothing!) when dry, so brushes should be kept wet whilst being used. To stop colours drying on the palette whilst being used a "stay wet " palette can be used, which cosists of a tray with wetted paper in the bottom. These are available from most art shops. The colours are very vibrant so it's advisable to mix colours to soften the effect. Brushes used  with acrylics can be hogs hair or soft nylon/sable mix, depending on the texture required on the  surface. Paint can also be applied thickly with a palette knife.
