Pastels
are available in oil or chalk style, but I prefer the latter. The chalk pastels
are made in stick and pencil forms, and vary in price and quality. The more
expensive chalk pastels are softer and blend so easily, the pencils can be
used where finer detail is required. My favourite pastels are made by SCHMINKE
and I use them on semi - transparent paper specially made for pastels, it
has a slight grain (called "tooth" ) which traps the pastel in it,
and I think it gives a more vibrant colour than a white paper would.
Pastel paper is sold in many colours including black - a good one to try
is Mi-TEINTES which has a smooth side and a rough side, so its very
versatile! The colours can be blended with a finger or a rolled paper stump
called a TORCHON, beware its a messy job! The finished painting should be
fixed by spraying the back lightly with an unperfumed hairspray which is
just as effective as an art fixing spray, and cheaper! The framed picture
should have a double mount behind the glass so as to keep off any pastel
dust. (See HINTS AND TIPS PAGE )
